St. Mary's Church was begun in the late 11th century when it had just a nave and chancel. The base of the tower was built in the 13th century and the nave may have been lengthened. About 1340, just before the Black Death, the north transept and south aisle were added. The north aisle and the top of the tower date from the 15th century. The Savage Family were responsible for converting the north transept into the Savage Chapel. Note that there is also a Savage Chapel at Macclesfield shown in the Cheshire section of this site.
