| Granary | Rear of the farmhouse |
Barton Farm was a grange belonging to the nunnery at Shaftesbury Abbey. The great 14th century tithe barn is 168 feet in length and has buttresses to prevent walls splaying while holding the enormous roof of timber and stone. The Granary has stone ground floor and sides but timber upper storey at the ends. It is now used as a shop.
The tithe barn was given by Sir Charles Hobhouse to the Wiltshire Archaeological Society in 1914. In 19389 it passed to the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works and is now run by English Heritage. Extensive repairs were undertaken after the war to restore it original appearance.
(The pictures of the barn entrance and the rear of the farmhouse were taken with an optical camera on the same day and digital images were obtained on a CD at the time of development.)
